FomVoice

Plans for the FomVoice voice communication module.

People are always wanting to speak to their teammates over headsets in cybercafes, especially if some of their teammates are in remote locations. The existing applications to do this aren't very good:

  • TeamSpeak has poor voice quality, is proprietary and requires a non-free license for use in a cybercafe. . . and to top it off they aren't very good about responding to email asking to license the product, even if you're willing to pay for it.
  • Ventrilo has excellent voice quality, but is also proprietary; the current version must be licensed, and, even worse than TeamSpeak, the guy behind Ventrilo has refused to even discuss licensing it for over a year to anyone who isn't already licensed--and is quite rude.

What's needed is an open source in-game multi-channel voice communication system that is free for anyone to use, or even expand on, as they see fit. This could potentially be too large a project to bite off, but the thinking in including it on the Fun-o-Matic list is that it may be possible to use exising open source Voice over IP (VoIP) software to put together something like this "fairly easily" (that being a relative term).
