FomShell

Plans for, and known bugs in, the FomShell module.

Module Purpose

FomShell replaces the standard Microsoft Windows desktop with a "restricted shell": it provides customers with GUI access to cybercafe features, making it easy for them to find and launch the applications they want, while also hiding features from them that they are unlikely to need. The appearance of FomShell can be altered by cybercafe management to include whatever games or applications they want to put on a customer menu, advertising, and so on.

FomShell can also be used to provide a security feature: if a cybercafe wants to lock down their stations and completely prohibit direct customer access to Microsoft Windows, it can be configured to do that with a "kiosk" mode.

FomShell also provides an integrated customer front-end to other Fun-o-Matic modules: it can allow customers to log into the Customer Database directly, without attendent intervention; it can serve as an alternate user interface for FomSaver, as well.

Module Status

Nothing has been done with this module yet; no design, no coding, no requirements, even.

Known Bugs

N/A

Plans for Version 1

  • Flash/HTML desktop to allow simple access to games; should allow straight-forward creation of new “skins”.
  • Login/logout capability linked to Customer Database and FomSaver.
  • Display time remaining in customer's account.
  • Allow (depending on cafe policy) enforcement of ESRB ratings by comparing game ratings to customer age in Customer Database.
